Fox News Analyst: Kenya Terrorist Attack 'Inevitable'

Tuesday, 24 Sep 2013 05:08 PM

The deadly terrorist attack in Kenya was al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab’s "Hail Mary" pass to re-establish itself  — and its resurgence underscores the fact that Islamist terrorism "is going to be with us throughout our lifetime," Fox News strategic military analyst Ralph Peters said Tuesday.

Peters, the author of "Hell Or Richmond," told "The Steve Malzberg Show" last weekend’s strike in an upscale Kenyan mall was "inevitable."

"It’s a Hail Mary pass," Peters said. "This well-executed attack is al-Qaida trying to get back on its feet. Shabab was at its strongest a few years ago . . . they had to do something to re-establish their street cred, bring in more recruits, bring in donations . . ."

Peters emphasized "Islamist terrorism is going to be with us throughout our lifetime."

"The world's most broken area in civilization is that of Middle Eastern Islam," he added.

"They're repressive societies and now, thanks to the information age, people within those societies know their alternatives."

The result, he said, is "a titanic, multilayered civil war," with just one course to deal with "violent religious fanatics."

"Two thousand years of history of fanatical religion-driven insurgencies show us one lesson without a single exception in 2,000 years," he said. "They cannot be quelled by negotiations, they cannot be quelled by compromise or palliative measures. You have to kill them and you have to keep on killing them."

In the U.S., the worry is "the renegades who join al-Qaida or the Taliban, get trained, and then come back," he added.

"The great mistake that the American government has made by the Bush administration and the Obama administration has been pandering to the extreme voices in the Muslim-American community, like CAIR [Council on American-Islamic Relations] and others," he said. "We should be concentrating on supporting and hearing the voices of the true moderates, the ones who want to be good Americans."
