The bipartisan budget deal passed the Senate on Wednesday, in part because lawmakers are eager to begin their holidays, Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt says.

"Some of this has to do with the fact that it's a couple of days before Christmas and they're smelling the jet fumes out on the runway and they want to get out of town," Hurt told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"Which I certainly understand, but the problem is that, once again, it's not good legislation," he said Wednesday.

Hurt is alarmed that Republican lawmakers are aligning with Democrats.

"The American people rely on the Democratic Party to be the party of irresponsible, daffy spending, beholden to unions to do all of that stuff. The Republicans are supposed to be immune to that. They're actually supposed to be adults when it comes to fiscal issues," he said.

"None of this can happen without Republicans clasping hands with Democrats to make it happen, and it's a real problem.

"And you take somebody like [Republican Rep.] Paul Ryan [of Wisconsin, who helped fashion the budget] – I have the utmost respect for the guy. He's a very serious guy, but increasingly he's kind of going out on limbs here and compromising what I would say are actual hardcore principles that are really starting to make me wonder about the guy."
