"The Mask You Live In," a new documentary that explores the pressures of masculinity on boys, is demeaning and exploitative towards males, says Christina Hoff Sommers, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.
"It's an effort by this rather charismatic filmmaker, Jennifer Siebel Newsom … to produce a documentary to rescue young men from their masculinity," Sommers told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"She thinks that they are captive to a narrative of maleness that renders them depressed and dangerous to themselves and others."

Sommers, author of "The War Against Boys: How Misguided Policies Are Harming Our Young Men," says Newsom, "thinks that they are captive to a narrative of maleness that renders them depressed and dangerous to themselves and others.
"It's just complete nonsense because she doesn't make a distinction between ethical masculinity and exploitative masculinity. She pretends all men are exploitative, and it's unhelpful and it's demeaning and it's going to create further problems for boys."
In her fundraising pitch
on Kickstarter, Newsom vowed the project would "examine how gender stereotypes are interconnected with race, class, and circumstance, and how kids are further influenced by the education system, sports culture, and mass media -- video games and pornography in particular."
