With Russia threatening to topple Ukraine's fragile government, now is the time to pass a natural gas exports bill, Colorado Republican Rep. Cory Gardner told John Bachman and J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

Doing so would make Europe less dependent on Russian natural gas, thereby reducing Russia's geopolitical power, and would bolster the American economy.

"This is an opportunity for America to flex its position as the world's energy superpower," Gardner said. "These are American-created jobs using American energy exported to our allies and friends around the world who desperately need an alternative to Russian monopolies, and so this is a way for the United States to have a win with the economy, creating jobs at home, and a win on the geopolitical front, as well, something we don't get to do often times alone or individually, let alone at the same time."

Story continues below video.

Gardner, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said it is important to pass the bill now, even though shipping and receiving of liquid natural gas couldn't start for over a year.

"Even though the molecule itself won't be moving until 2015, the fact that the signal will be sent happens the day we pass that legislation, the day it's passed into law," he said.

Gardner said a proposal to ban fracking in his state would kill 100,000 energy industry jobs in Colorado and would eliminate a vital source of the state's income.
