Men in their mid-50s should heed a University College London report warning that the daily consumption of more than two and a half alcoholic drinks can speed up memory loss and mental decline by six years.
That's the word from Dr. David Samadi, chairman of urology and chief of robotic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital.
"It's not a big surprise. [It] doesn't matter what kind of alcohol — beer, wine, whiskey," Samadi told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"It's going to really affect your brain, building up plaque, narrowing the [blood] vessels, which reduces the blood flow through the brain... and affect your memory. This is starting [at] the age of 56 in this particular study."
The study focused only on men and didn't address the effects on women.
Samadi says those who socially drink once or twice a week with friends should try to stick to a glass of red wine, which contains healthy antioxidants like resveratrol.
"But if you're going to do it on a regular basis every day, three, four glasses a day, you're going to affect your liver and certainly your memory,'' he said.
"Moderation is the key word. The best medicine is really having common sense. If you're drinking three or four glasses of red wine or other alcohols every night, that's a behavioral problem and you need to stop or see someone for help."
