Historian: Democrats Gained Little in Shutdown Win

By Bill Hoffmann   |   Thursday, 17 Oct 2013 05:05 PM

The Democrats may have won the war over the budget and debt ceiling, but it's a very shallow win, according to Tim Stanley, a U.S. history scholar and columnist for The Telegraph of London.

"This is one battle which, in terms of public relations, Republicans have lost. But what has Obama won?" Stanley told  "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"The government is still divided, the debt is still high … Obama has made it quite clear that he doesn't want to talk, he doesn't want to negotiate, he doesn't want to compromise. How on earth are Republicans supposed to work with that?"

Stanley believes the mainstream media is strictly in the pocket of the Democratic Party.

"Bizarrely, because of the mainstream media, it's Republicans coming out of this looking like the unreasonable ones. That's how amazing the White House machine is," he said.

Stanley advises the Republicans to pick their next presidential candidate carefully and stick to their conservative principles.

"If the Republicans are going to be dumb they can renominate another Mitt Romney," he said.

"Are you really saying that after a year, after Mitt Romney, a boring centrist who no one trusted, who surrendered on many of the major policy points, that we should renominate another one of those guys?"
