Democrats would be foolish to try to ignore the Benghazi scandal if Hillary Clinton runs for president in 2016, says Alex Seitz-Wald, a political reporter for The National Journal.

"A Pew poll that came out this week on Hillary Clinton … asked people what they thought her biggest negative was in her career," Seitz-Wald told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"The No. 1 answer from both Republicans and Democrats was Benghazi."

Story continues below video.

But Seitz-Wald said when he tweeted about the poll, he was answered by "a flood of liberals kind of making fun of me" for putting any credence in the issue.

"It would behoove them to take this seriously … This is something that she's going to have to deal with if she runs for president. And just pretending that it's not a thing will not help them in the long run," he said.

Clinton should face the music on Benghazi — in which terrorists killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others at the American diplomatic mission in Libya amid ongoing concerns about security — head on, Seitz-Wald believes.

"I think there's actually a pretty good response for her here, which is to take responsibility, apologize, and then to turn it back around on Republicans," he said.

"But instead of even doing that, which sort of seems like the Politics 101 response, the kind of posture that you get from most Democrats, and not from her herself because she's barely said anything, is that this is just not even something that they're going to bother responding to.

"They're not even going to glorify it with their precious time and I think that's just a big mistake."
