Acclaimed Canadian poet and essayist David Solway believes the standard of education in the United States and Canada has plummeted so rapidly that only a catastrophe can jolt the world into salvation.
"I'm actually very pessimistic about things," Solway told "The Steve Malzberg" on Newsmax TV.
"The only educational device that is going to work is catastrophe … We have to get hit hard with an economic implosion with people in the streets who can't cash in their food stamps, with maybe an EMP [Electro Magnetic Pulse] attack ....
"Something disastrous has got to happen before people pick themselves up over those who are left and say, oh my God, we were so wrong. We better do something about reconstituting ourselves."

Still, it's not a given that even that will work, according to Solway.
"There's no guarantee that even under those circumstances, reintegration will be possible," he said.
"As a teacher, a former teacher, I quit early because I just couldn't take it anymore … I see this happening at breakneck speed."
