The Conservative Political Action Conference's decision to invite New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to speak at its three-day powwow this week after snubbing him last year is "ridiculous," Forbes magazine columnist Rick Ungar says.

"This has to be the most fickle bunch I've ever seen. One year ago, they wouldn't even invite Christie to the party. This year they give him a standing ovation," Ungar told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"What's changed? The only thing that's changed is that the mainstream media has been going after Christie and they're defending him for getting hammered by the media – great way to make friends, right?

"If the media's against you, you must be on our side. It's remarkable, it's kind of ridiculous frankly that they went from not inviting him to the party to giving him a standing [ovation], but good for Chris Christie."

In his speech, Christie urged Republicans to stop allowing the media to influence its decisions.

"We have to stop letting the media define who we are and what we stand for," Christie said.

"The way we have to define ourselves is to say what we're for."
