CNBC host Joe Kernen stunned his audience on Thursday when he compared the theory of global warming to witchcraft.

He made the controversial remark on the network's Squawk Box show while discussing whether carbon dioxide emissions are to blame for January being one of the warmest months on record, despite the frigid temperatures in the eastern states of the United States.

Pointing out that records only go back 130 years while the planet was formed four billion years ago, Kernen said: "It's almost like witchcraft. In the middle ages it was witchcraft. You would have attributed adverse weather events to witchcraft."

He added, "Now it's CO2. When it's a warm year, it is because of [climate change], but when it's a cold year, just ignore it."

Kernen has previously stated he does not believe scientific data that suggests greenhouse gas emissions are causing the earth to heat up, according to the Huffington Post.

He recently said that "the Earth's geologic history fundamentally contradicts CO2 climate fears," while noting that there were warmer temperatures and an ice age when carbon dioxide levels were far higher than today.

Kernen's contentious comments came just two weeks after Secretary of State John Kerry called climate change perhaps the world's "most fearsome" destructive weapon, and mocked those who deny its existence or question its causes, comparing them to people who insist the Earth is flat.

But Kernen's views have been echoed by Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe, who claims that global warming is a "hoax" perpetuated by Democrats like former Vice President Al Gore to enact tougher environmental controls that are hurting large U.S. corporations.

"They don't get away with it in the eyes of the American people," said Inhofe, who has written a book on the subject called The Greatest Hoax. "I find fewer and fewer members of the United States Senate that are sympathetic to this whole cause."
