Republicans have President Barack Obama on the ropes, but don't know how to finish him off politically, says Pat Caddell, a former Democratic pollster.
If the Republican party would actually hit Obama on his trustworthiness over his "keep your plan" Obamacare promise
rather than just press their narrative, they could open the door on more trust issues, such as Benghazi and the IRS scandal, Caddell said Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto."
Doing so, Caddell said, would drive Obama's opinion and trust numbers even lower than they already have fallen. A Fox News poll shows the percentage of Americans saying Obama is honest and trustworthy and 45 percent.
Caddell called it a "very dangerous thing" for a president to lose the trust and confidence of the public. But he could theoretically bounce back if the economy improves and people think he is doing a good job, Caddell said.
"The problem is, voters start tuning you out," he said, and that's why it is vital for Republicans to strike.
"The Democrats believe that they can get away with this because the Republicans will blow it as they usually do," Caddell said. "They have Obama on the ropes to kill him, and they don't know how to do a kill – which the Democrats do. That's the nature of the beast."
Caddell clarified that he meant a "political kill."
