Dr. Ben Carson says doctors in a country with socialized medicine once shared their fears of an America with the same system.
Appearing on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto"
on Thursday, Carson said he gave a speech in such a country years ago. Afterward, doctors told him they were unhappy to see the United States heading in their direction.
If the United States falls to socialized medicine, they said, there will be no place left for medical innovations.
Carson is a noted opponent of the Affordable Care Act, speaking against it in February at the National Prayer Breakfast
with President Barack Obama, a proponent, sitting on the dais.
"I agree that everybody should have healthcare, but I think it's more a responsibility than it is a right," Carson told Cavuto on Thursday. That said, he added that the country does have a responsibility to everyone in our society.
He noted that the United States far outspends
every other nation per capita on healthcare already.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Thursday that the deadline for those trying to get coverage is being extended to Dec. 31.
"As I've said before," Carson responded to the news, "why not just postpone it forever?"
