Republicans handed Democrats a present when they tied funding for Obamacare to a budget resolution to keep the federal government operating, says former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey.
Armey, appeared on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto
" Tuesday, suggesting Republicans in the House of Representatives should just send a "clean" continuing resolution to the Senate and try to undo the Affordable Care Act a different way.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the Democrats are very happy, Armey told Cavuto. "The Republicans just let them off the hook." Democrats, he said, "have been dreading this day when the world would focus on how dysfunctional and horrendous an imposition on my life is Obamacare." Technical glitches
indeed marred the first day people were allowed to sign up for medical exchanges.
Instead, he said, "the Republicans rode in and said, all right, let's change the subject to the Republicans shutting down the government."
The GOP will have to come to terms with a clean CR that probably will have higher budget numbers than they would have had in the first place, he said.
With media attention
focusing on President Barack Obama and other Democrats calling it a "Republican shutdown," the GOP will be desperate, he said.
"It's the old line, I don't want any more cheese, I just want out of the trap."
Democrats, he said, lose with the public on both spending and Obamacare, but when the GOP links the two issues, it is Republicans who lose.
"Only after impaling themselves on the wrong answer did they get to the right answer," Armey said.
