After spending 18 years as a news anchor for a local news station in Charlotte, N.C., Republican Vince Coakley has decided to toss his hat in the ring to replace former Rep. Mel Watt, saying he wants to help Americans "understand the values of freedom," he said on Newsmax TV.

Watt, a Democrat, was named by President Barack Obama to direct the federal Housing Finance Agency, a post Watt has held since January.

"What makes America so great is the fact that we have a government that would set up to protect the people from government, and unfortunately now this has been turned on its head and too many of us are working for the government," Coakley told Ed Berliner Tuesday on "MidPoint."

"Unfortunately, we have ... been gradually conditioned to accept things that are unacceptable," Coakley said.

Coakley said he hopes "to help educate people so they understand the values of freedom — what this country was founded on in the first place."

The former TV anchor has an uphill battle in the upcoming race, since the 12th Congressional District has only 16 percent registered Republicans.

But Coakley says he has one thing going for him, "name recognition," and he says he's also trying to "communicate a transcendent message."

"I'm not going out and speaking a Democrat message or a Republican message," Coakley explained. "I'm speaking an American message, a liberty message, an economic freedom message, a prosperity message, and it's a language that a lot of people are going to understand in contrast to a lot of things that they have heard before."
