Retired Army Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer, who served as a senior intelligence officer, says that whatever information former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden took about the surveillance practices of the NSA is now in Russian hands.

"There were true keys to the kingdom he gave away," Shaffer told Ed Berliner on "Midpoint" on Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"I don't want to get into which those were because they would get in the way of the enemy," Shaffer explained.

Story continues below video.

While "about 80 percent of what he put out was already known and most of what he talked about was actually legal, except for the Sensenbrenner issues . . . which I think should have been exposed for what they were, illegal . . . about 5 percent . . . were truly top-secret secrets."

Shaffer explained that "anything that has to do with specific techniques or specific targets — that is considered extraordinarily damaging."

Shaffer says that he thinks that "whatever he had, the Russians now have."

"There's no doubt in my mind."

Shaffer said he "would argue" that "the Chinese have it" too.
