Even if Republicans ultimately help pass an immigration reform bill, Democrats are bound to get the credit for it, says Ruben Navarrette, a syndicated columnist and CNN contributor.
"The Democrats are going to get all of the credit from Latino voters for doing immigration reform, even if the Republicans sign on," Navarrette told "The Steve Malzberg Show" Tuesday on Newsmax TV.

That said, a lot of Americans — Hispanics, African Americans, white Americans, and others — do not want immigration reform as it has been proposed, he added.
"They do not believe that people should be able to stay here if they've broken the law to get here. And, for those people, it's also the case the Democrats are going to get not only the majority of the credit from Hispanics, but the majority of the blame from this other group," Navarrette said.
"So Democrats are very wary of that, and so their game has been — it's a horrible, cynical game — to try to bait the Republicans into saying and doing dumb things, which Republicans have a way of going along [with].
"At the end of the day, if immigration reform doesn't get done, the Democrats get to portray themselves as the heroes, the Republicans as the villains, but they never have to bite the bullet and actually get the reform package done."
