Michael Novak, a former scholar in religion, philosophy and public policy at the American Enterprise Institute, says his political ideology turned from liberal to conservative when he saw how far the country was moving to the left.

"I tried hard to work with the radical left … but I couldn’t stand it when people started spelling America with a K," Novak told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"My family were immigrants and … America has been so good to us compared to anywhere else on earth we could have gone … so I couldn’t stand that."

Story continues below video.

Novak, author of the new book "Writing From Left to Right: My Journey From Liberal to Conservative," said he saw his support of liberal causes backfiring.

"I supported the war on poverty, and then it ended so badly that crime jumped 600 percent in just a few years," he said.

"We had enormous proportions of young people born out of wedlock, and what do you think about that morally? Its social costs are enormous, as I learned when I studied it with a group of seminar people on the left and on the right."

Novak said the United States "is the place where a lot of new ideas were born. We're the first developed nation, we're the first democratic republic — not purely democratic, not purely republic, and the first to establish a bills of rights."

"The first in so many ways, and that's a terrific heritage to be part of," he said.

Novak is also the author of "The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism."
