MSNBC President Phil Griffin should use Martin Bashir's rant against Sarah Palin as the impetus to dump the acerbic political commentator, says Noel Sheppard, associate editor of the media watchdog Newsbusters.
"To me, this is a good opportunity for Griffin to say, 'You know what, we're done,'" Sheppard told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"'Your ratings stink, you're nothing but a vile, disgusting pig, we're done,'" Sheppard said Friday.

Last Friday, Bashir called the former Alaska governor and 2008 running mate of John McCain the nation's "resident dunce" and a "world-class idiot" for comparing America's national debt to slavery.
He read from the diary of British overseer Thomas Thistlewood, who told of punishing a slave with human excrement.
When Palin invokes slavery, Bashir said, "she doesn't just prove her rank ignorance, she confirms if anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, she would be the outstanding candidate."
Bashir later issued a long and rueful apology, which his MSNBC colleague Joe Scarborough said he did not write entirely by himself. Despite calls for his firing, the network has taken no action.
Sheppard said other hosts at the liberal news network don't appear to have learned from the Bashir controversy.
"It would have been interesting if the other commentators and hosts on MSNBC decided, you know what, we've got to tone this down," Sheppard said.
"Clearly they weren't given such a message."
