Rep. Gohmert: Warn Russia By Renewing ABM Program in Poland

By Bill Hoffmann   |   Wednesday, 12 Mar 2014 07:00 PM

U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert says he voted against giving a U.S. loan to Ukraine because the embattled nation is just too "nonfunctional."

"The government in Ukraine is . . . the victim of an assault by the Russians, and this administration wants to drive by and throw money at the victim while he's being assaulted. I don't see the purpose in that," Gohmert told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"There are much more effective things [that can be done for] Ukraine. How about we tell Poland [that] as a result of this action by Russia, we are immediately reinstating the anti-ballistic missile program in Poland?

"If we send a message we are now going to go through with the anti-ballistic missile program in Poland, we're now going to start helping in the Baltic states . . . and make sure that they stay free and independent," he said Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, President Barack Obama warned Moscow there would be serious consequences if it didn't pull its troops from Crimea.

Gohmert says the use of military force by the United States shouldn't be part of that threat.

You don't have to send armies . . . You start hitting Russia where they don't want to be hit, especially when their financial situation is not all that great," he said.

"You encourage Ukraine to make clear to Russia, hey, you threatened to cut off our natural gas, these long two pipelines that you rely on for so much of your income may just come to an end."
