Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be the "formidable candidate'' to beat in the 2016 presidential race, but the GOP is up for the task, according to Ed Rollins, the national campaign director for the Reagan-Bush '84 campaign.

"Hillary will be a very formidable candidate," Rollins told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.  "She'll energize the women voter, she'll energize a lot of the Democratic base that Obama energized."

Story continues below video.

But Rollins, now senior political analyst for Fox News, added that Republicans will likely have a candidate up for the challenge. "My sense is … we'll have a good candidate who will go out and run a better campaign than we've run the last couple of times,'' he said.

Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida, could potentially be that pick, according to Rollins.

"If Jeb basically chooses to run he's going to be a very credible, viable candidate. He's a great campaigner, he puts Florida very much in play for us, which is a key state for us," Rollins said.

"My sense is that he can win Florida and nobody else that's running at this point in time can guarantee that they could win Florida."

But getting to the Republican primary is "not a slam dunk," Rollins said. "There are some very credible other candidates that are out there and my sense is we're going to have a big race," he said.

"The man or woman who wins it is going to be a very credible candidate."
