Republican lawmakers hand out too many blank checks to government agencies under fire and must reassert themselves by cutting off funds to those unwilling to cooperate, says David Bozell, executive director of ForAmerica.

"Unless and until the Republican Party is going to get serious about reasserting its constitutionally mandated authority over the rules- and regulation-making processes in this country . . . we are simply not free people," Bozell told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We cannot go kick down the IRS' door, or kick down the EPA's door or the SEC's door. We rely on our elected officials to be those checks and balances to take our tax dollars and spend them wisely and refrain from spending them if they don't think that they're going to be spent wisely."

It's "just blank check, blank check, blank check. They have the power of the purse. I know that gets thrown around there fairly loosely, but it's what the Founding Fathers designed our system to be," he said Monday.

Story continues below video.

Bozell is exasperated by House Speaker John Boehner, who over the weekend revealed he has no plans to jail Lois Lerner, the former IRS official found in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify about the IRS' targeting of tea party groups.

"Gosh, Boehner is just so bloody frustrating . . . He just goes off and says that they're not going to be doing any prosecuting at all of Lois Lerner," said Bozell, whose nonprofit group promotes "personal freedom, personal responsibility, a commitment to Judeo-Christian values, and a strong national defense."

"Yes, she targeted tens of thousands of self-identified tea partiers and self-identified conservatives with audits and threatening them in every which way imaginable.

"But the Republican Party and the upper echelon of the GOP leadership just seem altogether content with continuing to fund every single budget expenditure . . . If the GOP was serious, they would go on the steps of the Capitol and they would say enough already . . . until we get to the bottom of these investigations."

Any agency threatened with the loss of funding would "snap to it in a second," Bozell says.
