David Horowitz, a founder of the New Left in the 1960s and now head of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, slammed Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and President Barack Obama as "communists" after a new poll showed de Blasio had an approval rating of just 45 percent.

"My parents were communist just like the mayor of New York, I was a new leftist in the '60s just like the mayor of New York, but I got off that boat and he never did, he's still a communist. Why should you be surprised, you elect a communist and then you expect good governance? I mean, what communist has ever run an administration well?" he told Newsmax TV's John Bachman and J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Wednesday.

"Unfortunately, we have an identical personality in the White House who is absolutely bent on destroying this country. He is responsible for the explosions of the Middle East, he's a supporter still of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is the fountainhead of Al Qaida and terrorism globally. He's Putin's patsy," Horowitz said.

"Every American with a drop of patriotic blood is terribly embarrassed that we have become a laughing stock, and that's basically because [President Barack] Obama thinks when America surrenders it's good for the world. He is an anti-American president; he is an enemy of this country. I wish more conservatives were more open about that. He has grown up in a communist movement and never left it," he said Wednesday.

Horowitz was an outspoken adherent of the New Left until the late 1970s, when he rejected leftism. His latest book is called "The Black Book of the American Left: The Collected Conservative Writings of David Horowitz."

Asked about the difference between progressives, leftists and liberals, he replied, "There are always people who don't know what they are doing and are not paying attention. So, there are a lot of people who call themselves liberal or progressive who are not really very political, who like the fact that Obama is cool and appears on television with idiots like [actor] Zach Galifianakis. People are suckers for that."

"However, where serious activists are concerned, the progressives, the leadership of the Democratic Party, I don't see any difference between them and the communist movement I grew up in and the New Left movement. They support America's enemies. They want to disarm the United States," Horowitz said.

"We have a secretary of defense who wants to disarm us in the midst of an aggression. This hasn't happened – when has a country swallowed another country like Russia has just done to Crimea? Of course, they did it to Georgia as well."

Horowitz said Republicans should be more aggressive in calling out the Obama administration for its misdeeds.

"Obama and Hillary [Clinton] might as well have pulled the trigger on those guys in Benghazi [Libya]. They lied, they are still covering up, and it wasn't an issue. The Middle East has exploded. The Muslim Brotherhood, which is our mortal enemy . . . was receiving – I can't remember – 16 bomber jets from the administration, billions of dollars in aid and political support ,and no Republican, none, went out there and said that about Obama," he said.

Horowitz argued that the administration should also have had to answer for pulling all U.S. troops out of Iraq.

"We didn't get the status-of-forces agreement in Iraq, so we don't have a base in Iraq. Look at a map, it's positioned between Syria, Iran and Afghanistan. You think it would be important to have 20,000 troops there and a base with bombers, of course it would be. Obama just gave that up. He betrayed every American who gave his or her life in Iraq, every last one of them. Just surrendered.

"Not one Republican said that. Not one accused Obama of sabotaging this country. Sabotage, use some strong words," he said.
