Panel: Americans Feel Less Secure Since Boston Bombings

A year after the Boston Marathon bombings, questions are swirling about what more could have been done to prevent the attacks and about the government's general readiness to prevent terrorists from striking on U.S. soil.

"One has to hope the government is taking a good, hard look at itself," Newsmax White House correspondent John Gizzi told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Newsmax writer Bill Hoffmann, appearing on the same show, said Americans generally feel less secure now than they did a year ago.

"At this stage of the game, this year, after the Boston Marathon bombing, people just keep their fingers crossed now, not really knowing whether something is going to happen. I don't know if things are as safe as they once were," Hoffmann said.

Meanwhile, security in eastern Europe continues to suffer as Russia allegedly foments unrest in Ukraine.

Stern warnings delivered by phone from President Barack Obama to Russian President Vladimir Putin won't be enough to resolve the situation, Gizzi said, and he suggested that the U.S. adopt sanctions against Russia's oligarchs that will prompt them to turn on Putin.

In the meantime, Hoffmann suggested, a travel ban on U.S. citizens visiting Russia might help undermine Russia's tourist economy.

"To keep American citizens and others, discourage them from going over there and spending their money, could do a lot of good for us," Hoffmann said.
