The FBI should assign a group of agents to unmask and clamp down on leakers who aim to "damage the president and bring him down" by passing damaging information to the press, veteran conservative pundit Patrick Buchanan told Newsmax TV on Friday.

And the ultimate goal from the media's point of view, is to force Trump out like it did President Richard Nixon.

"I'm not talking about leaks from the White House where people are dissing opponents inside the White House, saying who's down and who's up and all the rest of it. I'm talking about leaks," Buchanan said Friday on "Newsmax Now" with Bill Tucker.

"For example, the only way they got the meeting between [former national security adviser Michael] Flynn and [Russian Ambassador Sergey] Kislyak, I guess in late December, is somebody leaked the fact that where our intelligence had picked up that meeting."

Buchanan, who was a senior adviser to Presidents Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, called that occasion and many others "national security leaks."

"That's de facto a crime to put that out to reporters. These things are coming out constantly," Buchanan told Tucker.

"I have to believe somewhere in the FBI, [they] can set aside agents looking through the deliberate leaks because I think it's part of a general program that may not be a conspiracy but is a form of collusion to damage the president and bring him down."

Buchanan, a two-time GOP presidential candidate, also took aim at the media for relentlessly pouncing on the Trump administration.

"One of the problems the president's got with the American media is that his entire agenda is repudiated and rejected by them. They don't believe in America first," Buchanan said.

"They believe in the new world order. They believe in surrendering portions of American sovereignty to transnational institutions. They like the idea of open borders. They like the idea of collective activity rather than individual American activity. So they are against him from the beginning."

Buchanan also said the media is treating Trump differently than other presidents such as Bill Clinton.

"Bill Clinton displayed his bumbles and failures in his first year [but he] basically had an agenda that was by and large supported by the media. And he had been supported as a candidate for president of the United States," Buchanan said.

"Donald Trump comes into office with the almost blanket hostility of the national press, the national media, the mainstream media … They not only feel that he's not their candidate, they believe he won office by attacking them, raising issues they disagree with."

Buchanan also said the media believes it can be successful in bringing down Trump "as they were with Nixon."
