The United States could cripple Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin if it started to export natural gas to Europe at a better price than what Russia is charging, says foreign policy expert Herb London.

"If you were President Obama looking at this situation seriously, you would say, 'you know what, we're going to start exporting natural gas at a price lower than what the Russians are presently charging,'" London told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV Wednesday.

"We can bring Putin to his knees on the natural gas question, and that is something that has to be given consideration," he said.

The world's largest natural gas reserves are in Russia, and the European Union is its primary export market. However, Russia comes in second to the United States for natural gas production.

"The only hard currency that comes into Russia is in the form of natural gas or money," the president of the London Center for Policy Research said.

"The United States can sell natural gas at a price lower than what the Russians are presently charging and if we were to do that, we could obviously create an environment where the Russians have to change their way or move back," London contends.

The move would end up "bankrupting their country," he added.

"That is a decision that could be made by the president."
