A top New York legislator says calls for a special prosecutor to probe alleged ties between Russia and President Donald Trump are coming from forces who have "pledged to resist, persist, oppose [and] obstruct" the commander in chief.

Asked on Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live" about demands for an independent probe to determine if Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential race, Rep. Lee Zeldin told host Bill Tucker:

"I have a lot of faith in our intel community . . . I have all the confidence in the world in their ability to conduct an independent investigation.

"Until there's any shred of evidence whatsoever that the president himself has done anything wrong . . . I'm not going to start playing along hysterically with people who have pledged to resist, persist, oppose, obstruct entirely.

"People who are saying you can't work with the president at all because you will 'normalize' his presidency. I'm not playing along with that."

Zeldin, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Tucker he is willing to listen if credible evidence is provided by "our highly capable law enforcement and Intel community."

"I am very open-minded, willing to listen, and then you act accordingly," he said.

"But I could have a meeting with my colleagues in Congress about healthcare, tax reform, strengthening our border, improving our military . . . and all [the press] wants to talk about is whatever the headline is of the day they believe gives them the best chance of taking down the president."

Zeldin said he is concerned about the direction of the American media.

"Journalism is evolving into — I don't even know the word journalism is correct anymore. What we shouldn't be doing is rushing to judgment. We should not be conducting investigations in a search of a crime," he said.

Zeldin, co-chair of the House Republican Israel Caucus, also said he is not buying reports that the relationship between the United States and Israel may have been harmed by Trump giving classified information supplied by the Jewish state to Russians who visited the Oval Office last week

"I don't believe that that is something that is going to cause daylight and harm to our relationship with Israel," he said.

"People who are just jumping to this assumption that Israel is going to be furious and there's going to be daylight and harm done to our relationship — I don't see that at all."
