WSJ's Taranto: Obama Wanting to Be Impeached Is Unique

President Barack Obama's eagerness to have Republican lawmakers attempt to impeach him is unique in American politics, according to Wall Street Journal columnist and online editorial page editor James Taranto.

"It's gotten particular attention recently, in part, because Sarah Palin starts talking about impeachment, which of course, always gets the left excited,'' Taranto said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"But what really makes this different from anything we've seen before is now we have the White House getting in on this and talking about, 'Oh, those crazy Republicans are going to impeach the president!'

"Michelle Obama said something about it last week, then Dan Pfeiffer the Senior White House advisor on Friday mentioned it twice in the course of a Christian Science monitor breakfast, [and] Josh Earnest, the White House Press Secretary, has talked about it.''

In addition, Taranto said, impeachment chatter is being used by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which campaigns for House candidates.

"In order to raise funds they've been doing a series of fundraising emails last week saying, impeachment is a real possibility, send us money now. I understand they've raised more than a million dollars doing that,'' he said.

Congress would be foolish to attempt to impeach the commander-in-chief without broad public support, Taranto believes.
