Rand Paul: 'Conversation' Needed After Shooting Rampage

(Newsmax TV's "The Joe Pags Show")

The shooting rampage in Las Vegas should prompt a "discussion" on Capitol Hill as to what can be done to prevent future episodes of gun violence, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "The Joe Pags Show," Paul said it is important not to jump to conclusions or pass legislation based on a knee-jerk reaction.

"It's a terribly tragedy, and I think we should think about what the resolutions are, but I'm not willing to sort of jump to a conclusion that, hey, if we just banned this or that, it would fix the problem," Paul said. "So yeah, I think we should have a conversation about it, but I think we shouldn't decide things in the midst of a crisis.

"The crisis should prompt us to have a discussion, but we have to be not alarmist or immediately react in a way that doesn't really consider the pros and cons and unintended consequences of legal policy."

A 64-year-old with a large cache of weapons opened fire from his 32nd-story hotel room on a concert crowd Sunday night, killing 58 people and wounding nearly 500 others. The incident has injected new life into the national gun debate and whether semiautomatic weapons the shooter was using, along with devices that essentially turned them into automatic weapons, should be legal.

Paul said lawmakers have to tread lightly and not trample on the rights of Americans if they put together any legislation.

"You have to be very careful, even people who say it's for your own good, taking someone's rights away is a very significant action," Paul said.
