Heritages's Senger: Report of 20 Million Newly Insured Not True

By Courtney Coren   |   Thursday, 10 Jul 2014 05:40 PM

A recent report from the Commonwealth Fund claims that 20 million Americans gained healthcare coverage under Obamacare, but that number is an exaggeration, says Alyene Senger, writer for The Heritage Foundation's The Daily Signal.

"Saying 20 million got coverage because of the law is an exaggeration," Senger told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV on Thursday about the survey reported by Time Magazine.

"With Obamacare, especially, you see that people tend to count things differently than they should and it's always apples to oranges," she explained. "It's never quite the comparison it's supposed to be.

"This is another instance where they're saying these people gained coverage because of the law, but in reality the individual market existed well before Obamacare and these people were purchasing there beforehand," Senger added.

According to the writer from The Daily Signal, "in 2013 there were about 16 million people who purchased" health insurance from the individual market.

Under Obamacare there are "plenty of different places where people can purchase coverage and they're all interacting together" such as Medicaid, the exchanges, the individual market, and group insurance plans from an employer, Senger explained.

"There's too many apples to oranges comparisons going on in this particular report," she added.
