The United States will face its worst terrorist threat ever if it fails to help stop Islamic terrorists from turning Iraq and Syria into a caliphate state, retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters tells Newsmax TV.
"Our interest is in pounding, crushing, killing, defeating Islamist terrorists wherever we can find them,'' Peters told "The Steve Malzberg Show'' on Newsmax TV

"This is not going to be solved by negotiations . . . It's not about diplomatic niceties, it's not about policy differences. It is a religious civil war, it is brutal, it is going to get more brutal.''
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a splinter group of al-Qaida, is storming through Iraq, taking over city after city to turn the region into an Islamic state led by a supreme religious and political leader.
While Peters — author of the acclaimed Civil War novel "Hell or Richmond,''
published by Forge Books — is not keen on sending ground troops into Iraq, he says the caliphate must be stopped.
"We don't need to be in the middle of that by any means. But it is not in our interests to let ISIS, these Islamist terrorists, the deformed offspring of al-Qaida, establish a caliphate state, a terrorist state in eastern Syria and western and central Iraq,'' Peters said.
"If [President Barack Obama] allows the world's first pure terrorist state to emerge on his watch, my God, if that's not grounds for impeachment, I don't know what is.
"This is a real threat to the United States. Far worse than Afghanistan was when it was hosting al-Qaida . . . We should be taking this opportunity with airstrikes and eventually even other assets if necessary, but serious, determined airstrikes in eastern Syria, in Iraq, to smash this emerging caliphate before it takes deep roots.''
