The IRS is involved in a "cover-up of monumental proportions,'' as it tries to claim key emails sought in the investigation into a targeting scandal are lost, says Kevin Jackson, author of "The BIG Black Lie.''

"It's patently ridiculous for the IRS to try to pass off this argument,'' Jackson told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It is a cover-up. It is a cover-up of monumental proportions.''

The IRS says emails written by former IRS official Lois Lerner and six others — which may pertain to charges the IRS targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status — were destroyed when a computer crashed.

"I can tell you there's not a Fortune 100 or Fortune 500, probably even a Fortune 1,000 company in America that could not come up with the data from two years ago or even five years ago, particularly when it's just email that they're looking for. You can pull this data up,'' Jackson said.

Jackson made his remarks during a Newsmax panel discussion with Bridget Todd, a Democratic strategist.

"IRS investigations are no joke, they're very serious, and we all know that, but to automatically assume that not keeping proper records or proper data is necessarily indicative of something sort of wrongdoing, that's really jumping the gun,'' Todd countered.

"It's jumping the gun to sort of necessarily say this is proof of wrongdoing.''
