The government needs to do something to protect the United States from the flood of illegal immigrants pouring across the Mexican border, says former New Mexico state Sen. Joe Carraro.

Carraro, speaking with "America's Forum" host J.D. Hayworth Friday on Newsmax TV, said the country has to do something to find out why immigrants are coming in and to stop the flood and "make sure that terrorists aren't entering our country, that drug cartels aren't taking control of our southern border."

And even though large numbers have been bandied about describing how many immigrants are arriving, Carraro said the real figure could be even higher.

"What about the kids who haven't arrived," he said. "What about the kids who have been murdered, the kids that have been kidnapped, the kids that have been starving or lost or whatever?"

Liberals who are concerned about immigration should think about the children who have been lost on the way to the United States, not encourage more to come, because "that means there are going to be more lost and put in danger on this harrowing trip they're taking."

Meanwhile, he said, the government is imposing extra responsibilities on the border states because of the flood of immigrants, such as "education, healthcare, policing, whatever, on the states that they can't afford."

"We keep hearing that our country cannot be the world's policeman," said Carraro. "Well you know, if we're not, that's when we have a problem. The federal government has that responsibility."

Meanwhile, the added pressure to open up federal lands in New Mexico is enabling drug cartels to come in and take hold, Carraro said.

"In New Mexico, they are in a position where they can see the horizon and know where the Border Patrol is going," Carraro said of the cartels. "They've actually taken control of our land. In New Mexico, maybe we don't have enough law enforcement to take care of it."
