The recent escalation in violence between Israel and Hamas is occurring "because both sides are pretty stupid and never learn the lessons of the past," says James Zogby, the president of the Arab American Institute.

"Hamas doesn't get it, that violence is not going to end the occupation," Zogby told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"But Israel doesn't get it either, and that is that more violence from their side isn't going to end the resistance to the occupation," he said.

What's lacking, Zogby said, is "adult supervision."

"What you have is kind of an Israeli sense of impunity, no restraint on bad behavior," he said. "On the Palestinian side, like abused children, there's a sense that it doesn't matter what we do, we're going to catch hell anyway so we might as well give in to our worst instinct.

"You've got this pathology playing out on both sides, and people are the victims on the both sides," he added.

Zogby said he agreed with Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, who told Newmax TV on Monday that Israel wants peace -- with security.

"He's right. Israel wants security," he said. "So do Palestinians want security. They want independence. They want their rights recognized. Both parties want very similar things."

Zogby explained that the situation calls for someone who is willing to pull the two sides "apart."

"Two states is the only answer, but to get there, there's going to have to be a more forceful hand in pulling the parties apart," he said. "There has to be a firmer hand than any administration has been willing to demonstrate.

But in agreeing with Dershowitz, Zogby also took a shot at the outspoken Israel advocate: "Look," he said. "Alan Dershowitz is a great defense lawyer for guilty clients."
