Rep. Boustany: White House Must Help Recover 'Lost' IRS Emails

By Bill Hoffmann   |   Thursday, 19 Jun 2014 07:31 PM

The House committee probing the IRS tea-party targeting scandal says the White House and other federal agencies must help recover "lost" emails written by former IRS official Lois Lerner and her co-workers, Rep. Charles Boustany of Louisiana says.

"We know the emails that she sent and received within the IRS are available,'' Boustany told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It's the ones that went outside to the White House, to Treasury, to other agencies round the government [that are purportedly lost].''

And Boustany — chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee, which is probing allegations that Lerner targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status — is demanding their cooperation.

"The fact is, we're now expecting these other agencies to give us these emails,'' Boustany said.

"And we expect the president to give us his full cooperation in this effort.''

Last week, the IRS said it had lost an untold number of emails because of a computer crash in 2011 — a claim that has been met with skepticism by the Republican-led House committee.

Boustany is also seeking more cooperation from the IRS itself, and specifically from IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, who will testify before the committee on Friday.

"The fact of the matter is John Koskinen was confirmed by the Senate to clean up this agency and now he has to perform,'' Boustany said.

"And we're going to expect him to do that and we're demanding full cooperation from this administration.

"Now if the IRS cannot come up with these emails and they're giving us the song and dance which doesn't pass the smell test, then we expect the other agencies to give us what they have and that's where the president has to step up … We are prepared to use our subpoena power.''

Boustany slammed Attorney General Eric Holder for allegedly dragging his feet in helping expedite the investigation.

"They're in the stall game trying to bide this thing out. I don't expect anything to come from Eric Holder. This is the worst attorney general we've seen, certainly, in modern history,'' he said.

"This IRS scandal is serious. It's about constitutional rights that have been abridged and that's not tolerable, and the American people see through this," Boustany said.

"For the president to go on national television and say there's not a smidgen of corruption, well, what does he have to hide? Prove it. Give us the information we've asked for, let us complete this investigation. I can tell you we will not stop until we get to the bottom of this,'' he said.
