President Barack Obama's poll numbers are down, but the commander in chief is still more popular than a lot of lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Newsday columnist Ellis Henican says.

"We're halfway through a second term and presidents tend to sag,'' Henican told Westchester County Executive and New York gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino, guest host of "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Everybody's poll numbers are terrible. The president's poll numbers start looking really good when you compare them to the Congress, the Republican House of Representatives. They should be so lucky as to have Barack Obama's poll numbers.''

Henican — author with Dwight Gooden of "Doc: A Memoir,'' published by New Harvest — also believes Americans get fidgety as a two-term president begins to wrap up.

"At the end of the second term people start thinking, well, what's coming next? Give us something more exciting,'' he said.

Henican is not impressed by the probes being led by Republicans into the IRS tea party-targeting scandal and the Benghazi attack.

"These investigations led by people like Congressman [Darrell] Issa and others in the House have no credibility at all.

"The fact that he or some similar committee member is outraged at the behavior of the Obama administration means to most sensible people absolutely nothing because they're outraged about every single thing.

"So it has become impossible with the litany of Benghazi and the IRS and whatever other 40 things that are on your list of alphabet soup there, to figure out if there's anything legit in any of it.''
