Dan Gainor: Liberal Billionaire Donors Escape Media Scrutiny

By Courtney Coren   |   Wednesday, 27 Aug 2014 03:25 PM

While liberals vilify wealthy conservative donors like Charles and David Koch, liberal billionaires escape scrutiny because the mainstream media agrees with them, and it doesn't hurt that some of those donors own several media outlets, says Dan Gainor, of the Media Research Center.

The media likes "big-pocketed, liberal donors throwing money at liberal causes and liberal politicians," Gainor told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Wednesday. "They support that."

"They love whether it's Warren Buffett supporting abortion or [former New York City] Mayor [Michael] Bloomberg going after guns," Gainor explained. "Those are the kinds of things that they support."

"At the same time, they hate groups like the Kochs," he added.

The Media Research Center released a report on Tuesday highlighting the top five donors the media watchdog group says are "nearly as dangerous as George Soros."

Those donors are Bloomberg, business mogul Buffet, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, hedge fund manager Tom Steyer, and Soros' son, Jonathan Soros.

"Tom Steyer, a name that's not gotten a lot of attention in the major media until recently," Gainor said. "He's the new eco-guru, giving tons of money to environmental causes, and he made most of that money by doing that environmental thing — things like coal and stuff that the media hate and they don't want to talk about how he just pulled out recently."

The vice president of business and culture for the Media Research Center says that "Pierre Omidyar [has] been involved in helping fund First Look Media, this new Glenn Greenwald operation."

Greenwald is the journalist responsible for exposing documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, revealing a domestic surveillance program under the Obama administration.

"He's thrown $250 million at First Look Media, this stunning liberal development," he said.

Buffet, Gainor said, "owns a whole bunch of media outlets — 46 of them are conveniently in swing states."

"That means Warren Buffett owns all these newspapers in states that are the most political for this election," he said. "The Carolinas, Virginia, and states that might turn."

"He's a very open Democrat," he added. "Until recently he was involved in the Washington Post.

"The media doesn't want to talk about that," Gainor contends.

While serving as New York City's mayor, Bloomberg started Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which became an active anti-gun lobbying organization in elections around the country. He is also the founder of the media company Bloomberg L.P.

"Collectively, they're involved in 88 different media outlets or related organizations," he said.

Gainor said the good news is that "after a while, people tune them out."

"We've got very polarized media in this country, and now if you disagree with traditional media, you don't watch them," he explained.

"We're all divided up so much that the major media have less influence, but the left's response and the major media's response to that is they keep throwing money and start new ones," he said.

"We have to keep pushing on our end too," he added.
