Charles Hurt: Obama Uses Flight Ban to Punish Israel

Wednesday, 23 Jul 2014 05:55 PM

The FAA ban on flights to Ben Gurion Airport is likely a political move on the part of the Obama administration to punish Israel, says Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt.

"I mean there is no point except that it demoralizes Israel and it basically cuts them off . . .  from the rest of the world.''

The FAA banned the flights after a Hamas rocket landed within a mile of the airport in Tel Aviv.

"The administration has been absolutely clear . . . in its continued equivocation between Hamas, a terrorist group, and the Israeli government,'' Hurt said.

"It really is terrifying, and it's terrifying to think that all the support that the United States has given to Israel over the years can just evaporate that quickly.

"Why would anyone ever, ever, ever, trust anything the United States of America has to say or trust any sort of guarantee the United States makes if this is what we do to arguably one of our two most important strategic, closest allies on the planet? I don't understand it.''
