Calling Hillary Clinton to testify before the House select committee investigating Benghazi could backfire for Republicans hoping to discredit her, says her former law partner Webb Hubbell.

"From experience I would say, confronting Hillary is never a wise thing to do," Hubbell said of the former secretary of state on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

Hubbell — author of the new novel, "When Men Betray," published by Beaufort Books — says Clinton can overcome what critics perceive as a lack of accomplishment in the State Department and lingering questions about the Benghazi attack.

"I think so, I do think so. For one, she's got a whole book coming out about her accomplishments as Secretary of State," Hubbell said, referring to Clinton's upcoming tome "Hard Choices," out in June.

"I think that [book] will be the answer to your question."

Hubbell, appointed associate attorney general by President Bill Clinton, does disagree with Hillary Clinton's recent statement about men tiring with age while older women energize and are ready to serve.

"I would disagree with her on that.... I've been writing books for the last three years, going out and speaking, and writing articles about what's going on in the country," Hubbell said.

"I do think she is right that there are a lot of women who could make huge contributions both in business and in politics and I'd like to see more women in politics. We've screwed it up pretty badly."

Hubbell is complimentary of President Barack Obama's time in the White House.

"I think he’s doing as much as he can given the divided Congress and the attitude now of not getting along as being a political strategy," he said.

"Like most of the country, I'm more disappointed in Congress than I would say in President Obama.''

He also praised Attorney General Eric Holder and brushed aside criticism that the nation's top law enforcer has been held in contempt of Congress.

"I actually think Eric Holder in some areas has done a fantastic job. In areas relating to marijuana reform and relating to sentencing reform, I think Eric Holder has done a great job," Hubbell said..

"I have some concerns about the overall administration policies when it comes to the spying on Americans. I think that is concerning. I think the use of drones is another area of concern. But I think there's again, a lot of blame in those areas all around."

Hubbell's novel is a politically-charged mystery in which attorney Jack Patterson returns to Little Rock, Arkansas to investigate the shooting of a senator on live television.

"I think every fictional work is a little autobiography.... I was a lawyer and the main character, Jack Patterson, is a lawyer but, that's where the similarities stopped," Hubbell said.
