Former Vice President Al Gore tried to buy Twitter in the hope of merging it with Current TV, the television channel he launched in 2005.
The bid "was an idea for Current to merge with Twitter," Joel Hyatt, Gore's partner in the network, confirmed to Forbes
The revelation came after The New York Times published an excerpt
of columnist and reporter Nick Bilton's upcoming book, "Hatching Twitter,"
in which he wrote that at the beginning of 2009 cofounders Ev Williams and Biz Stone were "regularly turning down overtures to buy the company."

Among those making overtures, Bilton wrote, was Gore, who "pitched Williams and Stone one night over copious amounts of wine and Patron tequila at his St. Regis suite in San Francisco."
"Al helped me to pitch the idea to Ev and Biz. I just thought it was a great idea," Hyatt told Forbes' Jeff Bercovici.
"It certainly would have made some sense," said Bercovici, adding, "Twitter consists of user-generated content, which was Current's original mission as well."
In the end, Gore and Hyatt changed course
and sold Current for $500 million this January to Qatari-owned Al Jazeera
While the sale "made a nice pile of money for its cofounders," noted Bercovici, "it never came close to achieving any of their visions."
