Fox News resident liberal Bob Beckel surprised a few people when he called for the United States to “cut off” student visas for Muslims for a period of time so the government could figure out who should stay, who should go, and who should be “sent to prison.”

During a discussion Monday on “The Five,” a Fox News program on which he is a regular panelist, Beckel said, “I think we really have to consider, that given the fact so many people hate us, we’re going to have to cut off Muslim students from coming to this country for some period of time so that we can at least absorb what we got, look at what we’ve got, and decide whether some of the people here should be sent back home or sent to prison.”

The words sparked such a backlash that Beckel appeared on Megyn Kelly’s show on Fox News on Tuesday to defend himself.

Beckel said he was not suggesting that current students be sent home or that those who have already been approved not be allowed to start classes in the fall. He noted, however, that there are 75,000 Muslim students on visas in the United States.

“A student visa is the easiest thing to get. One of the people in 9/11 was on a student visa, and there have been others on student visas.”

While only a few of the terrorists who have struck on American soil may have entered the country through student visas, Beckel wondered how many who are currently here harbor resentment toward the United States.

“They come from countries where they are, frankly, brainwashed about the United States from the beginning. Their leaders don’t like the United States.”
