Rape case lawyer Steve Farese said women are "especially good at lying" while he attempted to defend his client Thursday against allegations in Tennessee.
Farese’s wealthy client Mark Gianni is accused of raping and choking a woman when she came to his mansion for a job interview as a housecleaner, according to U.S. News and World Report. His comments came during closing arguments in a Memphis courtroom on Thursday.
“People can be very good at lying,” defense lawyer Farese told the jury of 11 women and three men, The Commercial Appeal reported. “Women can be especially good at it because they’re the weaker sex ... and we want to protect them and not have anybody take advantage of them, at least I do.”
When people began to denounce Farese’s comments, he told the Appeal, “My job is not to care if anybody gets offended. Smart people will see it for what it is.”
Gianni, who owned an information technology company in 2014 when the alleged attack occurred, is claiming the sex was consensual.
When Gianni’s home was searched, police found drugs, guns, and evidence from another alleged rape, WREG reported. When he was arrested, he had his passport, a small amount of Viagra, and a large amount of cash, police said.
Social media quickly called out Farese for his comments about women lying and being the "weaker sex."
