Wisconsin becomes more competitive for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney with Rep. Paul Ryan now on the presidential ticket, Gov. Scott Walker said.

Walker, who survived a fierce recall election in June and became a conservative hero, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the Badger State became more competitive during the 2010 midterm elections and now, with Ryan on the ticket, becomes even more so.

"I thought it was competitive after our election," Walker said. "I think it's even more competitive with Paul Ryan on the line. And I think it's not just because Paul's from Wisconsin, but I think in the end to win Wisconsin, for a Republican to win, you not only have to secure your base, you have to reach out to independent swing voters."

Walker said Ryan does well with swing voters in Wisconsin. "He has tremendous appeal to swing voters, independent voters in states like Wisconsin, that are battleground because he's smart and he's bold but he listens and he relates well to voters all across the political spectrum," Walker said on the show.

"We saw in my election two months ago what they want more than anything is people that will tell them the truth, who are courageous and willing to take on tough decisions and Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are exactly the kind of comeback team to make that happen," Walker said.

In 2010, Republicans won races for governor, U.S. senator, attorney general, state treasurer and two U.S. House seats that had long been held by Democrats. Wisconsin has 10 electoral votes and hasn’t voted for a Republican for president since 1984, according to USA Today.

President Barack Obama leads Romney in Wisconsin 50 percent to 45 percent, USA Today reported, and won the state in 2008 by 14 percentage points.
