Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney doesn’t question whether President Barack Obama was born in the United States, says New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

And he told NBC’s “Today” show Tuesday that Romney probably wishes he could take back a joking reference he made last week to Obama’s birth certificate, Politico reports.

In Michigan Friday, Romney said,  “Now, I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital. I was born in Harper Hospital. No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”

For his part, Christie said, “I believe if he had to do it all over again, he wouldn’t have made a joke,” the convention keynote speaker told NBC. “You’re on camera 12 to 14 hours a day, and say things off the cuff. Believe me, I could put together a catalog of things I wish I wouldn’t have said. If you get a chance to talk to Gov. Romney, I think he will tell you he wishes he could take that one back.”

Christie noted that Romney hasn’t tried to make hay out of the issue in any way. “He’s been the clearest and most affirmative of the candidates running for this nomination, saying he doesn’t believe that is an issue,” Christie said. “He believes the president was born here and that shouldn’t be discussed.”

Asked last week if his comment represented a swipe at the president, Romney answered with an emphatic “No.”
