Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is downplaying the possibility of the Senate renewing an assault-weapons ban — suggesting he’ll instead press for measures that have a better chance of passing the House, according to the
National Journal.
"Let's be realistic. In the Senate, we're going to do what we think can get through the House,’’ Reid said on the PBS show “Nevada Week in Review.’’
“And I'm not going to go through a bunch of these gyrations just to say we've done something. If we're really legislators, the purpose of it is to pass legislation.’’

The top Democratic lawmaker suggested an assault-weapons ban could “maybe’’ pass the Democrat-controlled Senate, but “is it something that can pass the [GOP-controlled] House? I doubt it."
In the interview, which was reported in the National Journal, Reid said he would rather have lawmakers pursue a "careful and cautious" path.
"We have too much violence in our society. It's not just from guns. It's from a lot of stuff. And I think we should take a look at television, movies, video games and weapons."
He said the Senate would not "just be doing things that get a headline in a newspaper," but instead would focus on legislation "that we know we can do," with regard to guns.
