Pope Francis turned his flock’s focus back to social injustice in his first tweet since yesterday’s canonization mass, a celebration that brought world leaders and 800,000 pilgrims to Rome.

“Inequality is the root of social evil,” Francis said today via Twitter Inc. to his nearly 4 million followers.

Francis, 77, is returning to the central message of his tenure as he basks in the worldwide attention attracted by the canonization of two deceased predecessors, John XXIII and John Paul II. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Union President Herman Van Rompuy, among others, were in attendance yesterday. The pope stopped for greetings with Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny and King Juan Carlos of Spain.

Today, Francis is reminding his followers what he expects of them.

The Argentinian pontiff has dedicated much of his first 13 months in office to highlighting the disparities between rich and poor around the world. Policymakers must stand up to the wealthy and improve conditions and opportunities for those who have been marginalized by the market economy, he has said.
