National Journal Poll: Obama-Romney Race Dead Heat

President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are in a tie 47-47 among likely voters heading into the first debate of the presidential race, according to the latest United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll.

Other last-minute polls show the president with a slim lead, including the latest by NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Tuesday evening.

The National Journal poll has Obama leading by 5 points, 49 to 44 among registered voters.  The poll, conducted Sept. 27 to 30 has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 points.

As he has in other polls, Romney leads among independents by 8 points (49 to 41); and both Obama and Romney appealed to their respective party's voters by 90 percent.

The poll is a sign of good news for Romney's campaign which stumbled through the month of September after various gaffes and uneven performance by the candidate, and polls all over the map on his popularity. Polls in recent days indicate Obama may have slim margins, but even in battleground states he is not doing as well as he did in 2008.

The National Journal poll also asked likely voters which party they'd like to see control Congress, with Democrats winning by a slim margin on that front.
