Legendary singer and senior spokesman Pat Boone acknowledged in an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV that he is surprised Medicare has played such a prominent role in the presidential election but he predicted that as a result older Americans will decide the next president.

“We believe seniors — especially in Florida and some of the swing states, are going to make the difference in this coming election,” declared Boone, who is a spokesman for the 60 Plus Association, which is the nation’s leading conservative seniors’ organization. “Seniors are now becoming very aware that Obamacare has been a devastating thing for them. It is a death knell.”

Speaking at a 60 Plus event for senior GOP delegates on Monday at the Republican National Convention, Boone acknowledged that the selection of 42-year-old Paul Ryan to be the running mate of GOP nominee Mitt Romney has been well received by seniors.

“They’re elated over Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney and their ability to save Medicare and Medicaid and not do what Obama’s already done — take $700 billion out of Medicaid or Medicare to fund his Obamacare.”

Story continues below the video.

While Boone acknowledged praying that Romney would choose Ryan, he said he did not believe the Republican would opt for the Wisconsin native, who gained national prominence for proposing sweeping budget reforms to tackle the nation’s burgeoning debt and struggling entitlement programs as chairman of the powerful House Budget Committee.

“I did not anticipate that there would be a candidate that’s so ideal to address Medicare and Medicaid, but Paul Ryan is that man. He’s got the facts, the figures, the experience,” according to Boone. “He’s presented a plan, which the Democrats have not. And even though it will be revised in many ways — perhaps some ways — at least it is a plan. And the man knows how to do it.”

Boone said that America’s elected officials have known that Medicare and Medicaid were “in serious trouble — in fact, technically bankrupt” for several years now, but have been unwilling to take the necessary steps to right the system.

“Promises had been made to seniors that are impossible to keep unless things are changed, unless things are revised, unless serious measures are taken to make sure that there is a cookie jar,” he said. “You can’t keep handing out cookies when the cookie jar is empty. You can’t put more cookies in unless there’s somebody to manufacture the cookies. And so, that means jobs. That means an economy.”

He insists that Romney and Ryan have the best chance of fixing the system.

“Republicans have it right that we must save the economy and then make whatever changes must be made so that we can keep the promises that were made,” he asserted. “What this administration is doing is making it impossible to keep the promises — in fact, bankrupting the economy, which will ensure the collapse of every part of our whole system.”

Still, the Obama campaign has managed to scare some seniors with its campaign rhetoric on Medicare, even quoting the AARP in in its attack ads that claim Ryan’s plan would undermine Medicare and lead to higher costs for seniors.

“I think America’s seniors are getting wise to the whole attack ad philosophy,” he confided. “It’s becoming a part of American politics, which is very distasteful and which has caused a lot of seniors not even to vote because they feel that they don’t want to be part of such a demeaning process.”

But Boone encourages seniors to avoid feeling discouraged and issued a call to action.

“If you don’t vote for the right guy, you are in effect voting for the wrong guy. And so we can’t stay out of it,” he explained. “There’s no neutral. There’s no Switzerland when it comes to our elections. We’ve got to be active and vote for the best man of the two choices we have.”

His main objection to President Obama’s approach to addressing Medicare is that it’s exacerbates America’s already dire economic situation.

“What they are not telling us is that it is easy to make promises to fund things. Everything the president says he is going to do means that we have to pay for it,” said Boone. “We have to pay for it with money we do not have. Their idea is to print pieces of paper backed by nothing but those promises. It is a course for sure bankruptcy.”

As Romney prepares to introduce himself to a number of Americans through his acceptance speech on Thursday — people who have not necessarily been following the nuances of the campaign thus far — Boone said that a simple message will resonate best with senior voters.

“You’re on a plane, a new 777. It is beautiful, shining, and it is taxiing out to take off on its maiden flight,” Boone imagined. “The captain’s voice comes over the loud speaker: ‘Greetings folks. Welcome to our maiden flight in this great new aircraft. I am your pilot, Barack Obama; I must confess I have never flown this plane before. In fact, to be God honest, I have never flown any plane before. But, I know all these buttons and switches are bound to tell me something and I am going to radically transform the whole idea of flight. So sit back and buckle up. Now, how do I turn this thing on?’”

Boone said that Romney and Ryan have logged lots of air miles in such a scenario.

“Mitt Romney is the answer and Paul Ryan — people who have flown before, people who have run businesses before, people who know how the economy works, people who have been successful,” he added. “We have got to have experienced successful people in charge, or we are doomed.”
