Sarah Palin is pushing Florida Rep. Allen West as a possible Republican vice presidential candidate, calling him a “passionate and strong” public servant who “wants to put government back on the side of the people.”

“Top of my list is Allen West,” the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate told Fox New’s Sean Hannity Tuesday night.

According to Politico, Palin told Hannity the eventual GOP presidential nominee should “go rogue” and pick a running mate not considered “necessarily safe,” just as Arizona Sen. John McCain surprised the country by picking her in his 2008 campaign against Barack Obama.

“I love that he has that military experience,” Palin said of West, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who was the first black elected to Congress from Florida since 1876. “He is a public servant willing to serve for the right reasons. He understands the Constitution. He understands our national foreign policy issues that must be addressed. He has served. I really like him.”

Palin, however, also acknowledged there was a “long list” of possible other candidates, including another lawmaker from Florida — Sen. Mark Rubio, who endorsed Mitt Romney for the GOP nomination last week.

“He’s great too. He is another one,” she said.

Palin, recalling her own run as a vice presidential candidate, said whoever the Republican nominee chooses is “going to get clobbered” by media scrutiny.

West, she said, could stand up to the challenge.
