The communications intercept between al-Qaida leaders that sparked the current global travel warning for Americans, along with the closings of 19 U.S. embassies across northern Africa and the Middle East, are evidence of the Obama administration's failure to protect Americans, says retired Lt. Col. Oliver North.

"Bin Laden is dead, but radical Islam is alive and well," North said Monday on Fox News Channel's "Hannity."

"How's that Arab spring working out for you, Mr. Obama?" North said.

Members of the administration are lying to themselves and the public, North said. "This global warning is nothing more than evidence of the O-team's abysmal failure at a policy that was going to protect the American people. The jihadist threat is real, it is global," he said.

North noted the upcoming 16th anniversary of the American embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya on Aug. 7, noting that anniversaries are important to Muslim extremists. He said the recent jailbreaks from Pakistan, Iraq, and Libya mean there will be more suicide bombers.

"The lesson learned in Benghazi was learned by the jihadis," North said, because the United States has never taken action against anyone involved in the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

America is perceived to be weak by its enemies, North said.

"We went from playing offense to defense, and the bad guys know it."
