President Barack Obama attacked the move to make Michigan a right-to-work state on Monday, saying that it had “everything to do with politics” and that the move only concerned worker “rights to bargain for better wages.”

"What we shouldn't be doing is trying to take away your rights to bargain for better wages and working conditions," Obama told workers at a Daimler Detroit Diesel plant just outside Detroit, The Huffington Post reports. "We shouldn't be doing that. The so-called 'right-to-work' laws -- they don't have to do with economics, they have everything to do with politics.

“What they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money," he said.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder is to sign legislation on Tuesday making Michigan the nation’s 24th right-to-work state. The bill was fast-tracked by the GOP-controlled legislature.

Thousands of union supporters protested at the state capitol in Lansing last week, and more protests are planned for Tuesday, the Huffington Post reports.

Under Michigan law, the House and Senate must wait five days before voting on each other's bills. The legislature is set to approve final passage of the right-to-work law on Tuesday, the Post reports.

Snyder greeted Obama when he arrived in Detroit. The president’s visit followed an announcement by Daimler Detroit of a new $100 million investment to produce engines for heavy-duty trucks, The Hill reports.
